Charles Herman Garbinski was born on April 22, 1935 in Newark, New Jersey. He had two brothers and a younger adopted sister. After graduating from high school in 1954, he enlisted in the Army. He was in the Army from 1954 to 1956 and was stationed in France as a courier. After his discharge, he returned to New Jersey and worked for an insurance company. In the late 1950’s, he became an Orthodox Christian in Elizabeth, New Jersey. After a terrible snow storm in 1962, he decided to move to Los Angeles. He became a parishioner at the Holy Virgin Mary Russian Orthodox Cathedral in Los Angeles, and there he met his future wife, Barbara, at coffee hour. They were married on August 5, 1972 at the Cathedral. Chuck was very active at the Cathedral. He was on the Parish Council and a choir member for over thirty years. He worked for Bell & Howell for twenty-five years as a salesman, selling mail inserting machines. His many sales enabled him to become a member of the President’s Club, which was an elite club of Bell & Howell’s top salesmen. In 1997, Chuck and Barbara moved to Post Falls, Idaho and joined St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church. Here, again, Chuck served on the Parish Council and sang in the choir. He designed the iconostasis for the church and assisted in building it. At the end of 2002, Chuck learned he had ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). His humble acceptance of this fatal disease was a great inspiration to those around him. He reposed on February 19, 2004
